Give a settings 'check box' for "Unread Always Top"
Pinned conversations take priority over unread/new SMS, which means scrolling down to find new SMS.
Check a box to keep unread as top priority, filtering then below pins once read.
Also, a sliding re-sort for pins.

Absolutely! Unread on top should be by default, not a missing option.
