Yes, this would be way more elegant than the auto popup and in most cases replace quick compose functionality too. Right now quick reply is too annoying so I use quick compose instead or go to the app. The quick reply seems to be fast enough that using it as an intermediate step to get to the app (assuming the user selects this) would be pretty smooth even though it takes two touches instead of one. I came here to suggest this exact idea, so it's definitely broadly appealing!
